SIEM REAP: A Spokesperson for the APSARA Authority has stated that those who wish to use cameras that have been prohibited in the Angkor resort area must request permission in advance from the relevant authorities.
APSARA Authority Spokesperson, Long Kosal, told EAC News that a permit is necessary before visitors are allowed to use drones and 360- and 180-degree cameras at Angkor, while the content and purpose of the image usage will also need to be inspected. This requirement was made due to some inappropriate images of Angkor Wat being published in the past, sparking various online criticisms that negatively impacted the significance of the historic temples and the efforts of the APSARA Authority.
"We require the submission of a letter requesting permission to take pictures, and we will inspect the image content and intended use,” said the Spokesperson. “If the purpose is to promote tourism and culture, we will allow the use of the prohibited camera."
In response to claims that the camera ban prevents the promotion of tourism, the Spokesperson stated that the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, including the APSARA Authority, have been working with major international media to make Angkor Wat more known to the world.
It should be noted that the APSARA Authority has previously also informed those who want to record live video on the history of the temples in the Angkor resort that they must first submit a request to the authorities.
